It might be basic tablets for cold and cough or it might be diabetic control tablets or calcium pills. All these medicines are prescribed to us by our doctors or licensed pharmacist. Once they prescribe them to us, it is handed over to us by the pharmacy technician.

The role of a pharmacy technician is mainly to assist the licensed pharmacist. However, it also involves counting pills, weighing medicines and drugs, and mixing different medicines to prepare a particular dose. Where do they learn all this from? There are various pharmacy technician schools and colleges in the country that offer programs to train them. Once they complete the pharmacy technician training, they get their certificate which allows them to then work for various hospitals, retail or wholesale chemists and druggists. They also work under the guidance and supervision of an experienced pharmacist.

Their hours of work vary. In this industry, field time is not a factor which you can control. The need and demand of the person is decided by the job and its urgency. At times, they have to work at odd hours and even rotational shifts in hospitals and 24 hour chemists. The work is not very easy. It involves great amount of responsibility and labor. There is really no end to learning. The more you learn the more it is required. Reference to books and making notes should be done regularly. It should be a practice.

Pharmacy technicians work at a variety of locations and places. Mainly they work at retail pharmacies, grocery stores, shopping malls, hospitals, mail-order pharmacies, clinics, and pharmaceutical wholesalers. Many also get government positions. As time passes, the role of a experienced pharmacy technician will change. They will be given more added responsibilities, such as pre-screening patients and establishing prognosis programs.

In order to keep yourself in pharmacy tech market at a high level, the tech has to work with accuracy and perfection day after day. They must study from the sources and get knowledge where they are lacking. No job is easy, but when it comes to a job which involves life and health, details are vitally important. Even minor mistakes in proportion and dose must be avoided. Great care should be taken towards personal hygiene. No one will like to take medicines from one who has dirty hands or unclean nails and hair. A pharmacy tech's personality should be very presentable, as the patients will carry an impression of the hospital where you work.
